Exciting Times for Arts & Culture in Western CT

A crowd of people attending an outdoor event with an art installation

This time of year always makes me pause, to look back at what’s been accomplished and forward to what’s next. After nearly two decades in this work, I know one thing for sure: creativity changes everything. It shifts conversations, opens doors, and brings people together in ways nothing else can.

Arts and culture aren’t extras. They’re part of the backbone of strong communities, helping us connect, grow, and imagine what’s possible.

At the Cultural Alliance of Western CT, we’re focused on building that backbone for today and for the years ahead. And we’re looking for partners, volunteers, and new leaders who believe in the power of creativity to transform our communities, and who are ready to help make it happen.

What we’re working on:

BRIDGES 2026
A regional storybook tied to the 250th anniversary, BRIDGES captures stories of resilience, creativity, and connection from artists and cultural organizations across Western CT. It’s a way to honor our past while spotlighting the voices shaping our future.
Why it matters: Arts and culture reflect who we are, and where we’re headed.

The Tarrywile Project
This public art installation will transform Danbury’s Tarrywile Park into a space for reflection, connection, and creativity. Launching in fall 2026, it invites artists to respond to nature and community in meaningful ways.
Why it matters: It brings art into everyday spaces, making creativity accessible and part of public life.

Disclosure From a Cloakroom
Written and directed by Carol Dorn, a Danbury-based artist, this sponsored project blends film, performance, and mentorship to explore identity, vulnerability, and truth. Carol is mentoring emerging artists from Western CT, offering hands-on experience in storytelling, design, and production.
Why it matters: It’s a direct investment in a local creative voice and a model for how mentorship grows the next generation of artists.

Third-Space Danbury
We’re looking for funding to expand this initiative to activate public spaces with art, murals, performances, installations that foster belonging and combat isolation.
Why it matters: It turns overlooked spaces into places of connection, helping people feel seen and rooted in their community.

Cultural Districts
We’re helping Danbury, Bethel, and Newtown launch official Cultural Districts that celebrate local identity, support creative businesses, and boost civic pride.
Why it matters: Cultural Districts create infrastructure that makes the arts visible, valued, and central to community development.

The Arts Hub
We’re laying the groundwork for a regional Arts Hub, a shared space for collaboration, innovation, and creative exchange across disciplines.
Why it matters: It’s infrastructure for the arts, a place where ideas grow, partnerships form, and creativity thrives.

Creative Youth Development (CYD)
Our CYD program supports youth through arts-based learning that builds confidence, connection, and leadership. We provide partners with small funding, shared tools, and evaluation strategies to demonstrate impact.
Why it matters: It helps young people find their voice, build skills, and feel part of something bigger.

Juneteenth Coalition
We co-sponsor this regional effort to create a sustainable framework for celebrating Juneteenth, honoring Black history, amplifying local voices, and building community.
Why it matters: It’s about visibility and creating space for shared celebration and reflection.

Business Supports the Arts Luncheon & Networking
These events bring together business, civic, and creative leaders to celebrate the role of the arts in community life. They help fuel our work and spotlight changemakers across the region.
Why it matters: They connect sectors, build momentum, and show that arts and culture are everyone’s business.

Backroom Work
Behind every public initiative is a mountain of quiet, essential work — grant writing, fiscal sponsorships, strategic planning, youth program support, and more. Our small team handles it all, often with the help of volunteers and community partners.
Why it matters: This is the infrastructure that keeps the arts moving. Without it, none of the big ideas take root.
