After 2 1/2 years of planning and curating, Freed Formats: the book reconsidered opens in the first of eight venues on Saturday, March 30 at the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. The reception is from 4 to 6 pm. The Mark Twain Library in Redding will have a portion of the exhibition open for public viewing on the 30th with a closing reception on Sunday, April 28 at 3 pm. The last venue involved closes in Torrington, CT on October 19 at Five points Gallery.
Freed Formats grew out an idea to mount a small book art show in a tiny rental gallery at Ridgefield Guild and quickly grew into a traveling exhibition showing 135 pieces by 53 artists from 17 states and two foreign countries. It has become a major undertaking that will host artists talks, guided tours, screenings of an award-wining film of book art, and classes for adults and children who wish to learn about Japanese Stab binding and Accordion books. In all, there are almost 40 events planned.
