What words will you be remembered by?
Author Olympe de Gouges is struggling with just this question while around her the Reign of Terror threatens the guillotine for anyone who says the wrong thing. Along with her in searching for the right words are Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle who is fighting for freedom for her country, Charlotte Corday who is plotting to murder Jean Paul Marat, and former queen Marie Antoinette who is still trying to figure out what is happening in Paris and whether dessert will be served. Can these four women keep their heads when all around is chaos?
The Revolutionists is written by Lauren Gunderson, the most produced playwrights in America in 2019. Through her playful and insightful script, we follow our four heroines as they struggle with “life, revolution, impossible beauty standards.” The play is directed by Jared Reynolds whose short play “Experiential Education” recently received a professional production at Nelson Hall Theatre.
The remarkable cast includes Amanda Friedman as the intense and conflicted Olympe deGouges, Faith Fernandes as rebel and spy Marianne Angelles, Jennifer Wallace as the idealistic and murderous Charlotte Corday, and Rebecca Sargeant as the delightfully real Marie Antoinette. Shows are April 21-May 6 on Friday and Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $25, or $20 for students and senior citizens. There is also a free preview for area senior citizens on Thursday, April 20 at 8PM. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at www.BrookfieldTheatre.org.
