On its simplest level, the aim of alchemy is to transform a common substance into a material of great value. Likewise, the goal of ekphrasis is to transmute the viewer’s emotional response to works of art into words – poetry or prose – that bear a higher meaning or truth. Join award-winning poet and Aldrich educator Barb Jennes as we closely inspect several provocative pieces in the Museum’s current group exhibition Prima Materia: The Periodic Table in Contemporary Art to create an alchemy of word and image.
