June 24, 2023 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

In his studio in Bridgewater, CT, Robert Gumpper (1928 – 2005) spent decades recreating and modernizing antique photographic processes to fit his own aesthetic. From 1960 to 1980 he was most prolific in making images that responded to the turbulent times and his own sense of beauty. Brookfield Craft Center Gallery Manager, Jillian Doherty, has conceived and curated an exhibition that brings together original prints by Gumppers with the works of six contemporary photographic artists – Bill Gore, Colin Harrison, Marcy Juran, Barbara Soares, Jim Stasiak, and Terrence Tougas. The exhibition feasts on diverse image making processes that vary from darkroom to computer to in-camera to mixed media. At the same time Doherty’s arrangement of images highlights the conceptual connections as each artist works to combine what-the-camera-saw and their own perceptions. The exhibition is on view from June 17 to July 9, 2023, in the Brookfield Craft Center Gallery, Tue-Fri 12-5, Sat 11-5, Sun 12-4.
