A global pandemic, racial injustice, climate change, two presidential impeachments: All this happened in 2020 and 2021. Yet, many unprecedented firsts occurred in the 2020 election and within political offices. More women, minorities, gays and lesbians, and transgender people were elected to hold public office. Society relegates these groups to the trash heap. My portraits honor those that have been put down or dismissed yet persisted. They made strides against all odds. I use trash as metaphors – rising from the societal garbage heap and the necessity of legislatures to end climate change
