Workshop: Can It Be My Home? with Artist Hangama Amiri

February 25 @ 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

$15 – $30

Please join us for a special three-hour fabric workshop led by artist Hangama Amiri. Participants will learn directly from Amiri about her work and practice, while reflecting and sharing their own ideas of home, whether it is a place, a person, a dish, a scent, or an object. Amiri will lead the group through a process of developing ideas into drawings and further into a textile piece to take back home.

Participants are encouraged to bring with them an item related to home: it can be an object, a photograph, a text, or a piece of memory. In the first hour, the participants will be provided with brown paper to sketch down their ideas from their items to scale, a process that mimics Amiri’s own practice.

During the remainder of the workshop, Amiri will perform and instruct fabric applique, a quilting technique. The group will experiment with different collages of materials, colors, textures, surfaces, and compositions with fabrics. Through layers of artistic transformation, the participant’s work of art results in a translation to the original item, cultivating a new idea for connection to home.

The workshop will provide materials including colorful threads, fabrics, muslin, brown paper; tools including sewing machines, scissors, markers, pins, sewing kits, and tables.
